Agent readiness vs SEO, AEO and GEO — what is actually different?

SEO, AEO and GEO are all about winning a contest for attention: ranking a page, owning a featured answer, or getting mentioned by a model. They operate on content, and their outcomes are competitive, probabilistic and outside your control. Agent readiness is not a contest — it is an engineering property of what your server returns to a machine that does not run JavaScript. It asks whether a site can be read and acted on at all, the answer is binary per check and verifiable by anyone, and it is a precondition for the other three rather than a competitor to them.

The distinction that matters commercially

An SEO engagement cannot promise you a ranking, because the ranking depends on everyone else. That is not a criticism of SEO — it is the nature of a competitive auction, and honest practitioners say so.

Agent readiness is measured against the machine, not against the field. Either your homepage returns its substance without JavaScript or it does not. Either there is a capability manifest at the well-known path or there is not. Nobody else's behaviour changes your result, which is why it can carry a guarantee: we sell reaching 80 out of 100 or there is no invoice, and that sentence would be reckless attached to a ranking.

What each one is actually for

SEO optimises for position in a ranked list of links. AEO (answer engine optimisation) optimises for occupying the direct answer above that list. GEO (generative engine optimisation) optimises for being mentioned or cited inside a generated answer. All three work primarily on content, framing and authority.

Agent readiness works on the interface: crawlability, server-rendered substance, unambiguous entity identity, declared policy, machine-readable state, and a stated action surface. It is upstream of all three, because a page a machine cannot read cannot rank, cannot be quoted and cannot be cited.

What agent readiness will not do for you

It will not get you into ChatGPT's answers, and nobody can promise that. Agent-driven attribution is not measurable today and any figure quoted for it is a guess. The claim here is narrower and checkable: right now these systems cannot read your site, and afterwards they can — verified with a scanner you can run yourself, for free, as many times as you like.

It is also not a content service. Nothing in the fix rewrites your copy or adds keywords. If your page has nothing worth quoting, making it machine-readable makes a machine able to read that there is nothing worth quoting.
